GTAZ hosts International Human Rights Advocates

Recently, GTAZ concluded its second IVLP project of the year: “Investigating and Prosecuting Human Rights Violations.” The delegation included 13 individuals who represented 10 different countries.

At first, the delegation engaged in a panel discussion with representatives from Human Trafficking Task Forces in both Vermont and Arizona. From our city specifically, the delegation had the pleasure of meeting Commander James Gallagher, Phoenix Police Department. The meeting focused on the importance of cooperation and collaboration on anti-trafficking efforts.

The delegates were thrilled to then meet with Rebekah Browder, Section Chief Counsel, Office of the Attorney General, Division of Civil Rights Section; and Leslie Ross, Unit Chief Counsel, Arizona Office of the Attorney General, Division of Civil Rights Section; along with representatives from the Vermont Attorney General’s Office to learn about legal process involved in prosecuting cases; the work of the Civil Rights Division; and cite examples of cases involving voting rights, civil rights, or hate crimes.

In their final meeting in Arizona, the delegation met with Mr. Chris Panneton, CAPE Coordinator, Southwest Family Advocacy Center (SWFAC). Mr. Panneton provided a panoramic overview of SWFAC’s services and partnerships and how they operate to attain legal justice. SWFAC is a child and family focused facility where professionals in law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocacy, work together during the investigation, treatment, management and prosecution of child abuse cases, sexual assault, domestic violence and elder abuse cases.

Global Ties Arizona would like to thank all contributing members of  U.S. Department of State, Cultural Vistas, tech support, Guest Speakers, and of course the International Visitor Leadership Program for actively working hard towards creating a more just society.
